In 18th century Europe, a group of well-educated people, called Philosophes, used reason and observation to study human behavior in order to discover natural laws or universal truths. One belief that many of the Philosophes shared, was the importance of individual freedom. They believed that society would be improved in several areas, including government, religion, economics and social equality, if people were allowed individual freedom.
